Nippon Professional Baseball Betting Markets - Bet on Japan NPB
The Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league is Japan's highest level of professional baseball. We offer a range of baseball betting markets across professional baseball leagues including NPB. You can place a bet on every NPB match at Stake Sportsbook.
What is Nippon Professional Baseball?
Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) is Japan’s top professional baseball league. Founded in 1950, it has become one of the world's strongest baseball competitions.
The NPB is now arguably the second-best baseball league, ranking only behind Major League Baseball (MLB) in terms of revenue and attendance.
In the 1990s, the world took more notice of the NPB as several of its biggest stars signed with MLB clubs and became stars in the majors, elevating the profile of Japanese baseball. Shohei Ohtani is perhaps the best example of an NPB player who became a massive star in the US. Other recent examples include Kodai Senga and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
NPB format and the road to the Japan Series
27 March - 4 October - Regular Season
The NPB regular season features 12 teams divided into 2 leagues. The Central League and Pacific League have 6 teams each, and each team plays 143 regular season games. In 2026, this includes 125 games within each league, plus 18 games against the 6 teams in the other league. The interleague champion is the team with the best winning percentage over the 18 interleague games. The league champion is the team with the best record in the league at season's end and receives the league pennant. However, the top 3 teams from each league qualify for the postseason.
10-21 October - Climax Series
The NPB postseason begins with the Climax Series, held in each league. The 2nd- and 3rd-place teams play a best-of-3 series at the 2nd-place team's ballpark. The winner of this first stage advances to play the 1st-place team. The 1st-place team starts this 6-game series with a 1-game advantage. However, under specific conditions, it changes to a 7-game series with a 2-game advantage. Those conditions are if the 1st-place team finished 10 games ahead of the first stage winner. Or if the first stage winner had a winning percentage below .500. The winning teams from each league advance to the Japan Series.
24 October - 1 November - Japan Series
The Japan Series is the NPB equivalent of the MLB’s World Series. It pits the Central League and Pacific League Climax Series winners against each other. The format is a best-of-7 series, with a 2-3-3 format for where the games are held.
2026 NPB season — teams and title race
As mentioned, NPB has 12 teams: six in the Central League and six in the Pacific League. The Yomiuri Giants are the most successful team in NPB history. They have won 22 championships and finished runner-up in the Japan Series 14 times. The Saitama Seibu Lions and Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks are the next most prestigious teams in the NPB with 13 and 12 championships, respectively.
On the other side of the spectrum, the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles have just one NPB championship. While all 12 teams have won the Japan Series at one point in their history, the Golden Eagles are the only team without multiple championships.
Central League Teams
| Team | Championships | Most Recent Championship |
|---|---|---|
| Chunichi Dragons | 2 | 2007 |
| Hanshin Tigers | 2 | 2023 |
| Hiroshima Toyo Carp | 3 | 1984 |
| Tokyo Yakult Swallows | 6 | 2021 |
| Yokohama DeNA Baystars | 3 | 2024 |
| Yomiuri Giants | 22 | 2012 |
In 2026, the Hanshin Tigers and Yomiuri Giants have both clinched a place in the Climax Series. However, the final spot and the league champions are still to be decided. The Giants vs Tigers rivalry is one of the strongest in Japanese sports.
Pacific League Teams
| Team | Championships | Most Recent Championship |
|---|---|---|
| Chiba Lotte Marines | 4 | 2010 |
| Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks | 12 | 2025 |
| Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters | 3 | 2016 |
| Orix Buffaloes | 5 | 2022 |
| Saitama Seibu Lions | 13 | 2008 |
| Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles | 1 | 2013 |
In 2026, the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, Saitama Seibu Lions and Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters secured their place in the Climax Series. The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks are the current Japan Series champions and have also secured the Pacific League pennant for this season.

NPB bet types explained
Stake Sportsbook offers a wide range of betting markets for NPB games. NPB betting types are similar to what you will find in other baseball leagues. If you’re unfamiliar with baseball betting, you may read our guide on how to bet on baseball or take a quick look at the most common types of baseball bets:
Moneyline - Making moneyline bets means placing a wager on the outright winner and loser of a specific game.
Total - Totals betting in any sport lets you wager solely on the total number of runs scored in a game. Place a bet on the under or over line. Note that NPB run totals tend to be lower than MLB games.
Handicap - A handicap bet is the baseball version of betting against the spread. In baseball, this is called the run line, and a team must beat the run line for your bet to pay.
Player Props - Prop bets are among the most popular betting options in baseball and can be based on a variety of factors. These include how many strikeouts a pitcher gets or whether a hitter has a home run or an RBI in the game.
Live Bets - Once a game begins, you can still place live bets on the outcome or specific game events.
Parlay - A parlay lets you combine multiple bets into a single bet, increasing the potential payout and raising the difficulty. However, every selection must win for your bet to pay.
Future - Futures betting, also known as outright betting. These are typically bets made on the ultimate winner of the league championship or Japan Series.
NPB betting tips
Betting on baseball usually requires a plan. When betting on baseball, make sure you always make informed betting decisions and follow these tips:
Check the lineups - Don’t place a bet until you see the lineup of a game, just in case a key player is nursing an injury or getting a day off.
Pay attention to pitcher performance - The starting pitcher for each team usually strongly influences the winner of a game. But don’t just look at each pitcher’s performance; consider his track record against the hitters he’ll face.
Look at team form - Look at how each team has performed in recent matches. Likewise, consider each team’s record at home versus on the road. You also want to consider whether a team has travelled a lot recently or gone a long stretch without a day off. These factors can make teams tired and sluggish.
Consider the weather - Don’t forget to take into account weather conditions that could give either the pitchers or the hitters a distinct advantage.
Know the rules - NPB matches can differ from MLB matches because of specific rules. For example, in the final stage of the Climax Series, the pennant winner has a built-in advantage. This is useful to know when betting on the outright Climax Series markets.
