History of Honor of Kings

Honor of Kings was released in China in 2015. Honor of Kings was created by Tencent and TiMi Studios. Originally called League of Kings, the game uses the same 5v5 format and features similar characters and abilities, though they’re based on Chinese mythology and folklore.

A year after the Chinese launch, the international adaptation, Arena of Valor was launched. This adaptation changed user interfaces and heroes to better suit Western players. Both games are available to play on mobile devices, including Android, iOS, and HarmonyOS.

In 2024, the worldwide launch of Honor of Kings was completed. It’s since grown its player base to over 100 million and become the highest-grossing mobile game in the world. What’s more, it’s now a professional Esport, with a host of talented players and teams.

The first Honor of Kings Esports competition, the Champion Cup, was introduced in 2016, shortly after the game’s release. It was later renamed the World Champion Cup and has remained the most prestigious event in professional HoK.

One reason HoK is so popular is that it’s a mobile-only Esport. All professional matches are played on a mobile device, making it incredibly accessible.

In 2025, Tencent invested $15 million into developing professional Honor of Kings leagues outside of China. These included leagues in the Philippines, Indonesia, MENA, South Asia and more. The game was selected to be included as part of the Asian Games 2026.

Major teams & players in KoG

King of Glory: Major tournaments

The King of Glory professional Esports scene now features a range of tournaments, including regional leagues and major international tournaments. The game is most popular in China, which is where many of the best players and teams are from. However, it has expanded to many other parts of the world as well.

The majority of HoK tournaments use the global banpick, which means that once a hero has been used in a game, it’s no longer available for other games in that series. However, the Ultimate Battle rule often applies to the final game of a series. This means that if scores are tied, the global bans from the previous games are removed, making all heroes available once more for the final game.

Some of the biggest Honor of Kings tournaments include:

King Pro League

Abbreviated as KPL, this is the highest level of Honor of Kings competition, with teams from cities across China. You can bet on teams like AG Super Play, Wolves, Weibo Gaming, Dragon Ranger Gaming and Edward Gaming, among others. The King Pro League features a Spring and Summer Split, before the best teams compete in the Grand Finals.

The KPL Grand Finals holds the record for the largest live audience for an Esports match. It features 12 teams competing for a share of the $9.8 million prize pool over 3 stages. The challenge stage uses a single round-robin format, with matches decided by the best of 5 games.

One team is eliminated from the challenge stage, while 5 qualify directly for the knockout stage. The remaining teams advance to the breakout stage. This is a single match decided by the best of 7 games, with 3 winners advancing to the knockout stage.

The knockout stage of the Grand Finals is a double-elimination bracket, with matches decided by the best of 7 games.

Honor of Kings World Cup

The Esports World Cup is the world’s largest and most prestigious Esports event, featuring over 20 different games, including Honor of Kings.

The Honor of Kings World Cup takes place annually, featuring the world's best teams and a prize pool of over $3 million.

20 teams took part in the 2026 Honor of Kings World Cup, which took place in Paris, France. It consisted of 3 stages: play-ins, group stage and playoffs. The play-ins featured 8 teams split into 2 groups. Matches were decided by the best of 3 games, and the top 2 teams qualified for the group stage.

In the Honor of Kings World Cup group stage, 16 teams are split into 4 groups. Matches are played to the best of 3 games, and the top 2 teams from each group qualify for the playoffs.

The playoffs stage is a single-elimination bracket, with matches decided by the best of 7 games. However, the 3rd place match uses a best-of-5 format.

Honor of Kings Challenger Cup

Another popular KoG tournament is the Honor of Kings Challenger Cup. It’s the highest-tier domestic cup competition in Honor of Kings, featuring 32 teams from Chinese Honor of Kings Esports leagues.

The 2026 edition of the HoK Challenger Cup offered a prize pool of more than $1.4 million. The tournament was divided into 2 stages.

Stage 1 featured 32 teams and 2 rounds of single elimination. The first round was decided by the best of 5 games, while the second round used a best-of-7 series. The Challengers’ Blessing rule is in effect for the first stage. The top 8 teams advance to the second stage.

Stage 2 of the Challenger Cup features the top 8 teams from the previous stage, which are then randomly drawn into a double-elimination bracket. This bracket uses a best-of-7 format, although the Grand Finals are a best-of-9 series. There’s no Challengers’ Blessing rule in the second stage.

Honor of Kings International Championship

The Honor of Kings International Championship features top international teams from around the world. In recent editions, Chinese teams haven’t been eligible to enter. However, the top 3 teams all earn entry into the Challenger Cup. In addition, there’s a $1 million prize pool.

The tournament consists of a group stage, followed by the knockout stage. For the groups, teams are split into 4 groups, and each group plays a double-elimination, best-of-5 bracket. The top 3 teams from each group advance to the knockout stage. The knockouts use a double elimination bracket, but matches are decided by the best of seven games. Group winners are initially matched against group runners-up.

KPL Growth League

The KPL Growth League is the 2nd division Honor of Kings league in China, offering a prize pool of more than $400k. It typically features 12 teams that compete through a group stage and playoffs to determine the champions. The top 3 teams can earn entry into the KPL, with the champions qualifying directly to the KPL Spring split.

The Honor of Kings Major League is a merger of former regional leagues Honor of Kings Major East League, Honor of Kings Major West League and the Wildcard Kings Series. It features 8 teams and includes a Spring and Fall split. Each split offers a $35,000 prize pool and includes a group stage and playoffs. The top 3 teams qualify for the Honor of Kings International Championship.

Honor of Kings Brazil Championship

Honor of Kings is popular outside of Asia too, with the Brazil Championship open to the best teams in Brazil, such as LOS and Influence Rage. This competition features a Spring and Fall edition each year. The top 2 teams of the Spring championship qualify for the Honor of Kings International Championship. Meanwhile, the top 2 teams of the Fall championship qualify for the World Cup.

King of Glory betting tips & strategies

Betting tips cannot guarantee a win. Here are some helpful betting tips and King of Glory betting strategies to help you make more informed choices:

• If you haven’t done so already, download the mobile battle game for free and play. Before placing any HoK bets, make sure you understand how the game works, each character's main abilities, the significance of kills, and how to win games.

• Even if you’re not interested in playing the game yourself, you can watch it to get a better idea of the gameplay and team strategies. Free live streams are available at Stake, giving you a chance to understand the game modes and how the game works while learning the key things to watch for.

• Follow the KoG teams on social media and learn more about their players. You can also check out their recent form and discover new teams to back. Track Esports results, recent form, and player performance, looking for consistent MVPs, especially those who play in mid-lane or jungle.

• Make the most of all the available betting markets. There are many ways to bet on HoK at Stake, including first blood, map winner, total kills, and handicap betting. If a team is looking dominant, consider the -1.5 handicap market.

• Check the live betting odds as the game is happening too. Track the gold graph to gauge how far ahead each team is. If one team is more than 5k gold ahead after 10 minutes, they’ll most likely secure the win.

• Consider the tournament context too. Online vs LAN tournament performance can vary a lot, with underdogs often upsetting the odds in online qualifiers. Remember, elimination rounds are higher pressure and will see teams tighten up and play more carefully.
